Gonzales at a glance
Gonzales is a city of 8,647 people (2020), 16 miles southeast of Salinas, and winner of the Culture of Health Prize in 2019.
What that means for your plumbing
Gonzales has older homes on the original grid and newer neighborhoods on the edges. Hard water, aging pipes and water heaters are common needs; see leak repair. Newer subdivisions on the edge of town were built with PEX and modern fixtures.
Valley heat
Summers are warmer here than on the coast, and garages get hot. Wine country and row crops surround the city on both sides of the valley.
A 50-block town
Dr. Mariano Gonzalez and his brother Alfredo laid out a 50-block town in 1874 on land that had been Rancho Rincon de la Puente del Monte, granted to their father Teodoro in 1836. In 1872 they gave the Southern Pacific a right-of-way, and a depot followed. Older homes on the original grid often have galvanized pipes; see repiping. It is a member of the Association of Monterey Bay Area Governments.
