Seaside at a glance
Seaside is a city of 32,366 people (2020), formerly East Monterey, about 2 miles east-northeast of Monterey and home to CSU Monterey Bay and the Monterey College of Law.
What that means for your plumbing
Seaside has many older homes on small lots, with aging supply lines and drains. Galvanized pipe and slow drains are common calls; see drain cleaning. Small lots mean water heaters often sit in tight garage corners where straps and venting are hard to reach.
Coastal hills
Homes on the slopes above the bay can have long, steep sewer laterals. Hillside streets above Fremont Boulevard have laterals that run downhill a long way to the main.
A resort that grew
In 1888 Dr. John L. D. Roberts laid out East Monterey on 160 acres as a resort community next to the Hotel Del Monte; it was later renamed Seaside, and its post office opened in 1891. Much of Fort Ord, including the Bayonet and Black Horse golf courses, now sits within the city. Older bungalows near downtown often need repiping; see repiping. The old Fort Ord land inside the city now holds campuses, golf courses and new homes.
