Marina at a glance
Marina is a city of 22,359 people (2020) on the Monterey Bay coast, 8 miles west of Salinas on State Route 1, and the newest city in the Monterey area.
What that means for your plumbing
Marina mixes homes from the 1960s and 70s with new neighborhoods built on former Fort Ord land. Older homes need water heater and fixture work, newer ones mostly tune-ups; see water heaters. Base-era buildings that were converted to homes sometimes have plumbing that's been modified many times.
Salt air
Homes close to the dunes deal with salty, damp air that corrodes outdoor fittings and hose bibs. Wind off the bay keeps dune-side neighborhoods cool, foggy and damp much of the year.
After Fort Ord
William Locke-Paddon founded the town on 1,500 acres he bought for the purpose, and the post office opened in 1916. Marina incorporated in 1975, and when Fort Ord closed in 1994, CSU Monterey Bay turned barracks into dorms. Former base housing and new builds sit side by side, with very different plumbing; see repiping. Students at the university and veterans at the Veterans Transition Center add rental housing that needs quick repairs.
